John David Galt - 18AL and 18GA Game Kits

For several years I published Mark Derrick's game kits 18AL and 18GA, with his kind permission, and sold them at cost.

I sold the last one on August 13, 2009.

Both games can also still be downloaded for free from this page, if you'd like to print your own.  I intend to leave them up unless and until Mark asks me to take them down.

These are kits -- you will need to cut out most of the parts.  Both games play pretty much the same as the original versions (though Mark has written one new rule for 18AL, which is included).  However, I have changed the appearance of some of the parts, and my sets include game money and, optionally, wooden tokens (neither of which was provided in earlier sets).  See the Release Notes, below, for complete details of the differences between my versions and Mark's.

I have rewritten the rules of both games so that they no longer assume you are familiar with other 18xx games.  All sets shipped on or after 13 June 2002 include the new rules.  You can also download the latest versions here.

Most questions covered by earlier clarifications documents are now in the rules.  Similarly, the Train and Phase Chart is now part of the rules.  However, the Tile Upgrade Chart for each game is still separate, because its graphics prevent me from including it in the text or Word versions of the rules.  (The PDF versions of the rules do include this chart, but I've made it available separately anyway.)

The optional score sheets let you run the last set of operating rounds on paper or on a computer, if you don't want to bother passing out the cash.  There are two versions of each one.  The "print" versions have all the spaces for numbers left blank; they are used to print out paper score sheets, like the ones included in the game kits.  The "compute" versions, when opened in Microsoft Excel, will add the totals for you.  (They will not tell you when the bank runs out of money, so you will have to figure out for yourself how many rounds there are before the game ends.)

The "small map" files are 8.5 x 11 inch versions of each map that appear on the back page of the rule book.

The "map in parts" files are the ones I use to print the game maps.  They produce two pages on 8.5 x 14 inch (US "legal size") paper.  Be sure to turn OFF the option "Shrink image to fit paper size" when printing these, because they were made from the full size maps and do have parts that extend beyond the printable area.

The "tokens" files contain enough tokens for five complete copies of the game.  I print them on sticker sheets.

The "tiles" files also cover both games.  They come in two versions: one for printing in black-and-white on colored card stock, the other for printing in color on white card stock.  (Both versions are made from the same Corel Draw file -- to get the version for printing in black-and-white on colored card stock, go into Corel's Object Manager and delete the layer named "Background Layer for White Paper".)  Some pages are only for 18AL, some are only for 18GA, and some are for both; the title line at the right side of each page tells you which is which.  (If it says "18xx" rather than a specific game name, it's used in both games.)  Some pages contain enough tiles for more than one copy of the game; again the title line will say so.

European players may be interested to know that Wolfram Janich publishes a German language version of 18AL.  Contact him for details.
