1837 Phase Summary Note: Normal (passenger) trains in 1837 must be purchased in the order listed. The freight ("G") trains are a separate sequence, though their availability depends on the sale of passenger trains in some cases. Therefore they appear last in the list. How Train Many Cost Effects of Purchasing Train ----- ---- ---- ------- -- ---------- ----- -- -- -- Initial conditions: Only yellow tiles are available. Building is allowed in Austria-Hungary and Italy, but NOT in the yellow hexes of Bosnia-Herzegovina. "2" and "1G" trains may be purchased. Companies may buy trains only from the bank. Train limits: 4 for major companies, 2 for minor and coal companies. (A coal company is only allowed to own freight trains and will be capable of operating at most one train, since its only "station marker" is its mine. Major and minor companies may own trains of any type and may run freight trains from any mine, no matter who owns that mine.) Coal mines are worth the lower of the two values shown. Coal companies may convert to shares of major companies at the beginning of any round of either type, once 50% of the major company has been sold. (This becomes mandatory at the end of the stock round in which the last non- conversion share of that major company is purchased, or when the first "5" train is purchased, whichever happens first.) One operating round follows each stock round. 2 14 90k No changes. 3 5 180k Phase two begins. Green tiles are available. Building in Bosnia-Herzegovina is allowed for the rest of the game. "2G" trains may be purchased (once the "1G" trains have sold out). The train limit for major companies is reduced to 3. Companies may buy trains from one another. Beginning next stock round, two operating rounds follow each stock round. 3+1 2 280k The train limit for minor and coal companies is reduced to 1, except for minor companies of the Ungarische Staatsbahn (Hungarian National Railway), which are still allowed two. 4 4 470k All "2" trains are removed from play. All tiles in Italian territory are removed, and the green "Bo" tile (#426) is placed on Bozen. Italy is off-limits for the remainder of the game. "3G" trains may be purchased (once the "2G" trains have sold out). The Suedbahn (Southern National Railway) must form, and all five of its minor companies must convert. The owner of the Kaiser Ferdinand-Nordbahn (k.k. #1) may choose to convert it, forming the k.k. Staatsbahn. If he does so, other minor companies of the k.k. may also convert. (Both options are offered again at the start of every round of either type, until conversion becomes compulsory when the "4+1" train is purchased.) The train limit for the three National Railroads (Suedbahn, k.k. Staatsbahn, and [later] Ungarische Staatsbahn) is 4. 4E 1 500k The director of the Eisenbahn Pest-Waitzen (Ug #1) may choose to convert it, forming the Ungarische Staatsbahn (Hungarian National Railway). If he does so, the directors of other minor companies of the Ungarische may also convert. (Both options are offered again at the start of every round of either type (AFTER any holders of k.k. minor companies make their choices), until conversion becomes compulsory when the first "5" train is purchased.) Note that when the director of the Ug #1 or #3 converts his share, the holder of the non-director share in that same minor company must convert it, if he hasn't already. (Thus, the non-director shareholder of the #1 has no choice at all about when to convert.) 4+1 1 530k The k.k. Staatsbahn must form, and all three of its minor companies must convert, if they have not already done so. 4+2 1 560k No changes. 5 2 800k Phase Three begins. All "3" trains are removed from play. All private companies are removed from play. All remaining coal companies must convert. The Ungarische Staatsbahn must form, and all five shares in its three minor companies must convert, if they have not already done so. Brown tiles are available. "4G" trains may be purchased (once the "3G" trains have sold out). Train limits are reduced to 3 for the three National Railroads, and 2 for all other major companies. Coal mines are worth their higher values. Beginning next stock round, three operating rounds follow each stock round. 5E 1 830k No changes. 5+2 1 860k Both "3+1" trains are removed from play. 5+3 1 900k No changes. 5+4 2 960k No changes. FREIGHT TRAINS: How Train Many Cost Prerequisite Effects of Purchasing Train ----- ---- ---- ------------ ------- -- ---------- ----- 1G 10 100k None.
